The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, required kitchen redesign on six floors of its 18-storey international headquarters.
Each of the original kitchens filled long, linear spaces that differed slightly in size, location and purpose. A single design was integrated into the assigned spaces. The implementation accommodated a tight construction schedule, minimized employee inconvenience and allowed for easy installation on each floor. Minimal built-in furnishings facilitated ease of movement through the narrow space.
Innovative design transformed the narrow, previously cluttered spaces into an open and welcoming setting for international delegates to dine and allow for informal gatherings.
The richness of hardwood––local, inexpensive ash, which ages attractively––was extended throughout the space, including the kitchen unit, tables and accent wall.
The compact cabinets, which hide electrical components, help maintain an orderly kitchen. A muted colour palette and under-cabinet lighting contribute to a restful atmosphere. Handle-free drawers and doors complement the sleek design.
Table supports were attached to the wall to clear the floor for easy movement. The wave design accommodates two or three people per wave and facilitates conversation and social interaction within the confines of a narrow space.
To save space and promote accessibility, flashlights and colour-coded helmets assigned to members of the security staff were assembled on a custom-designed wall organizer.
