With deceptive simplicity this project convincingly rejuvenates an otherwise forgettable building into a beautiful showroom gallery.
Layers of old construction were peeled away to reveal the original rough concrete and brick finishes that now serve as an understated backdrop. A floor of the building was removed to create a spacious vaulted entry zone. Stairs were refurbished and, in some cases, reoriented to create an open space and allow easy ascent or descent to the show rooms.
On the upper level the lights are tucked away in ceiling troughs. The original steel columns are painted black.
The entryway is an open two-storey space with access to upper and lower floors. It is bright with natural light while lower levels are a mix of light and shadow. The building’s original concrete and brick were exposed by removing previous finishes. For new finishes, stucco was chosen to complement the original materials.
Thin, elegant handrails complement the interior’s minimalism.
Tinted glass screens separate individual showrooms.
